It can become overwhelming when your child is learning to read. Navigating teaching letters, sounds, and finding age-appropriate games/activities can be stressful. No worries though because here at Classroom Must Haves, we have compiled a list of 10 of the most fun, engaging, age-appropriate games/activities for your child to learn their letters and sounds!

1: Zingo

Zingo Word Builder is a wonderful early learning game that helps kiddos who are learning to put letters together to form words. This game is perfect for learning phonics, vowels, consonants, and learning to decode CVC words. This is one of the top go-to games for family game night at my house!

Zingo Sight Word Game is also another highly requested game to play at my house! It helps kiddos recognize, repeat and match their sight words. Perfect for those developing readers! The sight words included in this game are: (and, come, for, here, my, said, the, three, we, where, are, have, our, she, there, they, went, what, who, me, in, two, now, want)

Zingo is such a fun game to play on those family game nights. It’s great to have a few go-to games that you know everyone (even the little ones) can play and enjoy!

2: CVC Builder Toolbox

The CVC Builder Toolbox is such a fun and interactive way to help your developing readers learn how to recognize beginning, middle and ending sounds in words. This activity comes with CVC word cards and tri blocks to build the words on the cards. What a great hands-on activity to learn to read!

For a free downloadable CVC activity, check out my CVC Word Builder Mat with ABC cards.

3: Sight Word Swatting

The Swat a Sight Word Activity is one of my absolute favorites! You can get more creative with the activity by putting the sight words on a wall or sticking them on surfaces around your house! The kiddos have so much fun swatting and looking for sight words!

For an added challenge, set a timer and see how many they can find and swat in a set time! You could even get a nerf gun and shoot the sight words!! So many possibilities!

4: Super Why ABC Game

The Super Why ABC Letter Game was “THE” game at our house for quite a few months. My kiddos always asked to play this game! If your little ones like Super Why, then they will definitely love this one!

To play use question cards from the 4 main characters and answer them by pointing to letters, sounds, and words on the board! It’s great for younger kids and younger school-age kids as well!

5: Sight Word Bingo

Sight Word Bingo is another favorite in our house. It combines bingo and learning, and you cannot get any better than that! Everyone loves bingo! It comes with 36 double-sided bingo cards and enough markers to cover ALL the things! Your little reader will be begging to play this one!!

6: Scrabble Junior

Scrabble Junior has a two-sided game board that is fun for kiddos of all ages! One side is the traditional game board and the other has built-in words that you’ll fill in with your letter tiles. My 5-year-old loves this game and he likes to get creative making his words!

Scrabble Junior is perfect for practicing building words, decoding words and practicing putting letter sounds together!

7: Match it Memory

The Spelling Match It Memory is a great game for kiddos who need some help with letter recognition, word formation, and spelling. You play the traditional match it game but are looking to match the beginning sound and ending of the word. The match it cards includes pictures as well! This game is super fun to do as a family!

For preschool or early learning kiddos, the Alphabet Memory Match It Game could be another option! This match game works on upper and lowercase letter recognition and of course, helps boost memory skills!

8: Boggle

Boggle is one of the most fun adult games and I was so glad they made a child version! What’s great about this version is that it can be used for kiddos who are just learning their letters or older kids who are practicing spelling! Perfect across all age ranges!

This game is also great for letter recognition, memory, phonics, and strategic thinking! Definitely check this out for your developing reader!

Those are my top 8 games/activities for learning to read and practicing reading skills that my kiddos have enjoyed. They are so much fun and when you play them as a family, your kiddos and you will love them too!
